What Court Documents Allege
Just after 2:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, IMPD responded to 17th Street and Central Avenue on Indianapolis’ near north side. According to court documents, a car struck a curb and then hit a parked vehicle, and a witness reported that the driver left the scene with several children in the car. Officers located a woman and three small children roughly four blocks away.
Shyann Cole, 28, was arrested and charged with five counts, including neglect of a dependent and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of .15 or higher. Court documents state a portable breath test returned a 0.196 result. The children were evaluated by medics at the scene. Children Riding With an Impaired Driver
This scenario is not rare. NHTSA reports that in 2024, 21 percent of children 14 and younger killed in motor vehicle crashes died in drunk-driving crashes, and in 53 percent of those deaths the child was riding in the vehicle the impaired driver was operating.
