Why are intersections so dangerous?

It is no secret that intersections are dangerous. In fact, the majority of serious accidents take place at intersections. If you’re just looking at the statistical odds regarding where you’ll be involved in a car accident, that is where you face the greatest danger.

But why are intersections so hazardous? There are a few things to consider.

Changes to traffic speed

For one thing, many intersections mean the traffic has to stop and then resume again. Anytime there are changes in speed, it increases the odds of a rear-end accident. All it takes is one driver at the back of the line who doesn’t realize that the cars ahead of them are slowing down.

Traffic crosses paths

Another issue is simply that an intersection means that numerous vehicles have to cross paths. This is similar to making a left-hand turn, which is one of the most dangerous maneuvers a driver can do. Any time that they have to drive in front of cross traffic – even if that traffic is supposed to stop – the odds of an accident go up.

There can be more traffic congestion

Finally, intersections are just where many different types of traffic come together. You could have cars and trucks in the travel lanes, cyclists in the bike lane and pedestrians who are using the crosswalk. It’s a much more complicated situation than driving down the open road, and that leads to mistakes and accidents.
